Randa told Kelsie she had a surprise for her in the midst of their late lunch, but no matter how many ways Kelsie tried to needle it out of her, she refused to tell her what it was.

Following Randa’s lead in the early evening, Kelsie put on the only dress she’d brought with her, and her coat, and, outside the lodge, Randa flagged down a carriage, in which they huddled together under the blanket as the steady beat of horses’ hooves carried them across the ski village to another inn.

As soon as they walked inside, Kelsie spotted the sign and glanced to Randa, who smiled triumphantly as they went through the open door of the hall together.

“What is this? Self-flagellation?” she asked, once she had chosen seats near the back in case Randa decided she couldn’t endure it after all.

“No,” Randa assured her. “I’m not punishing myself. I just…” Hand slipping into Kelsie’s, her eyes moved over her face. “Think you deserve it.”

“Thank you,” Kelsie said, and Randa smiled as she released her hand to slide her arm around her. Settling back to listen to the sounds of Christmas from the stage, Randa even pretended she didn’t hate being there.
